DOT Exams
If you have a job that requires you to drive, you will need a certificate from the Department of Transportation stating that you are healthy enough to drive for a living. To get this certification, you will need to undergo a DOT physical. At Cutitta Chiropractic, Dr. Cacie Wrye has had years of experience performing DOT exams for residents of Pittsburgh, PA, and Millvale, PA. If you have a DOT exam scheduled, you should know what to expect.
Complete Medical History
During your DOT physical, you will be asked questions about your medical history. You must be 100 percent truthful about your medical history. If you leave anything out and get in an accident or sustain a work injury, there could be serious consequences. The best way to protect yourself is to answer all of the questions truthfully.
Vision Test
During your DOT physical, you will take a vision test. You will be asked to read the letters on a Snellen chart. If you wear glasses or contacts, make sure you bring them with you on the day of the exam. If you don't pass the vision test, you will be required to see your eye doctor and repeat the vision portion of your DOT physical.
Hearing Test
During your DOT physical, the examiner will perform the whisper test to see how well you can hear. During this test, they will stand about 5 feet away, and you will face one ear toward them and cover the other. The examiner will whisper a few words to see how well you can hear them. After, they will test the other ear. If you fail the test, you will need to see an audiologist or an ENT before passing the test.
Blood Pressure and Pulse Rate
You will need to have your blood pressure and pulse rate tested. This will help the examiner detect any abnormalities and make sure that you are healthy enough to sit for long periods. If you fail this test, you will need to schedule an appointment with your primary care physician.
Physical Exam
Your DOT examiner will need to perform a physical to ensure that you are healthy enough to drive for long periods. The physical exam won't be as involved as your annual exam with your primary care physician, and it will include the following:
- Weight check
- Examination of your mouth and throat
- Listening to your heart and lungs
- Testing your balance and reflexes
Urinalysis
You will need to have your urine tested during your DOT physical. The examiner will test your urine for diabetes and any other conditions that would require immediate treatment. If your employer requires it, the examiner will also screen the urine for the presence of drugs and alcohol.
